Karatonov in Krasnoyarsk before entering the medical faculty at Tomsk University. Alongside his studies, he attended drawing and painting classes at the Tomsk Artists' Society until the October Revolution. As early as 1922, Lavroff exhibited in Moscow where he became a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia.
From 1927 to 1935, he was sent to France to further his artistic knowledge and promote Soviet art among his French communist comrades. Lavroff then presented his works in art salons, such as the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne in Paris. He became known for his numerous animal sculptures produced in bronze and ceramic by publishers like Marcel Guillemard. Upon returning to Moscow in 1935, he became an official artist and created monumental sculptures and busts of Soviet leaders. An exhibition dedicated to him was held in Moscow in 1982.
